The mighty CAST are coming to Arena Torquay on Saturday 8th November to celebrate 30 years of 'All Change' after their huge sold out arena tour supporting the mighty Oasis.
Cast, a band synonymous with the Britpop era, emerged from Liverpool in the early 1990s. Known for their infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics, they’ve left a stubborn stain on the UK music scene. Let’s dive into their story, their roots, and the tracks you simply must hear before catching them live.
Before forming Cast, John Power was the bassist and backing vocalist for The La’s, another iconic Liverpool band. The La’s are best known for their timeless hit "There She Goes". Power joined the group in 1986 and played a pivotal role in their rise, contributing to their self-titled debut album in 1990. However, creative tensions led to his departure in 1991, paving the way for him to explore his own songwriting and form Cast.
Cast was born in Liverpool in 1992, with John Power taking on lead vocals and guitar. The band’s name was inspired by the final word on The La’s album ("The change is cast").
Emerging during the Britpop movement, Cast quickly gained attention for their uplifting sound and introspective lyrics.
Cast’s debut album, All Change (1995), became the highest-selling debut for Polydor Records, featuring hits like "Alright" and "Walkaway". Their follow-up albums, Mother Nature Calls (1997) and Magic Hour (1999), solidified their place in the Britpop pantheon. However, their fourth album, Beetroot (2001), marked a departure in sound and led to the band’s split shortly after its release.
In 2010, Cast reunited, releasing Troubled Times in 2012 and continuing to tour and record. Their most recent album, Love Is the Call (2024), showcases their enduring talent and relevance.
Before seeing Cast live, make sure to familiarise yourself with these standout tracks:
"Walkaway" – A poignant ballad that captures the bittersweet essence of Britpop.
"Alright" – An anthemic track that exudes optimism and energy.
"Sandstorm" – A dynamic song with driving rhythms and introspective lyrics.
"Flying" – A soaring melody that showcases the band’s knack for emotional resonance.
"Free Me" – A powerful track with a message of liberation and hope.
Described by Noel Gallagher as a “religious experience,” Cast’s live performances are a celebration of their rich musical legacy. Their ability to connect with audiences, combined with John Power’s charismatic stage presence, makes them a must-see act.
