It's been a scorching week in the UK and what better way to spend a Friday night than in a dark basement at The Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham with the air con struggling to keep up and 3 wonderful acts to keep us entertained..
Amie K was first is up, a late addition to the night, with her stunning voice and beautiful story telling songs. Her short set got the night off brilliantly with a mix of folk and pop as her beautiful voice filled the room. The song 'Pink Skies' was a particular favourite.
Next up, a bit if a change of pace as new Birmingham outfit, Cam Curtis, an energetic 3 piece. They got the crowd moving (but not too much, as I said it was really hot!) with some great tunes. I think they said it was only their 2nd or 3rd gig but they were very tight with a great set. They finished on Harvey Danger's hit 'Flagpole Sitta', don't know it? Maybe if you were a keen watcher of Peep Show you would better recognize it as the theme tune from the show!
And then it was time for the main event. While Emma has been a regular on the Worcester and West Midland music scene for many years in lots of different guises, this was only gig number 5 with 'The Genuine Noise'. However, it was clear early on that these songs are well rehearsed and honed to perfection.
Emma's brand of quirky pop, think CMAT but a little less Irish, in a checkered dress, is genuinely fun. Even where the subject matter has a more serious nature, Emma's smile radiates through. With partner James on bass and Neil on drums, the 3 piece deliver high energy tunes and constant movement, even on this small stage. I didn't think James stood still for the whole set, maybe only to wipe himself down with a towel between songs!
Emma's vocals are fantastic, really strong, as well as playing guitar and occasional flute intro. And in between songs the chat is fun and full of humor. With a tendency to over share (in the nicest possible way) we learnt about her ADHD, her recent stopping of medication because it made her too hot and not eat, she has a funny eye trick (demonstrated to perfection) and the poor selection of dress for tonight should she choose to roll around the floor and what might be exposed!
And the songs are brilliant. 'Waiting for the party to begin', about the competition she entered to play Glastonbury and all of the waiting, 'Cry wolf' about a previous relationship and 'Standing in my own way' off the new album are all cracking tunes. That new album, out on 8th August, promises to be a brilliant release with a launch night planned in Worcester in early August.
It may have been about 90 degrees, but no one minded as we all danced and laughed along with the band. Emma is just a bundle of joy, with some serious musical talent, and with these catchy songs and infectious smile more people need to get a listen to Emma Howett and the Genuine Noise. I hope the new album provides the platform for bigger things in the near future. A fun night that left all with a smile on their faces and a little more joy in our hearts....... and a sweaty back!
Get the new album, in all of the usual places, from August 8th.
