VELVET SHAKES have steadily been releasing catchy singles since 2018. As they continue to permeate the music scene with their special brand of indie-pop-rock, they are all set to release their debut EP, ‘Mellowdrama.’ Consisting of four tracks, the EP wastes no time getting listeners moving. So far every track is my favorite, but I’ll start in ascending order.
‘Can You Do The Right Thing’ has a wonderfully, interstellar sound. The chorus is catchy and well-rounded, while the guitars are incredibly rhythmic and bounce off of the beat with high energy. Up next is ‘Alone Again.’ It opens with reverbed vocals and melodious guitars. Once the rumbling beat kicks in, the song swirls into a mellow indie ballad that is both romantic and powerful. My second-place track is ‘Material Life.’ Lead singer Josh Bithell has established that this song is about his discomfort with materialism/consumerism and his acknowledgment of his contributions to it. The beat is my favorite on the EP and the synthesizer strings sound expensive and glorious. My absolute favorite track on the EP is the closer titled ‘Your Love.’ It is a musical journey that starts with rising strings and morning sounds and culminates into a raucous, 80’s dance banger.
Honestly, this EP is perfection. It is pop, indie, rock, electronica. It is everything I want and love at the same time. What a fantastic start to an amazing career.
