When it comes to debut singles, the results can be very hit or miss depending on the artist in question. Some artists need some time to refine their sound, which can leave their first couple of releases wanting. Others seem to just appear overnight as fully developed artists. Michelle Ward’s debut single “Dolly Daydreaming” is a sterling example of the latter of those two categories. This song is so well put together and so delightfully layered, that it is hard to believe this is Michelle’s debut single.
The track has many influences. From soul to jazz to pop, “Dolly Daydreaming” does not stay in one place for long. Its infectious chorus reminds me of 60’s girl groups while other sections of the song have very jazzy undertones and even mixes of reggae. All of this is complemented by Michelle’s rich singing voice. It is both pure and velvety with a very compelling delicacy that is very distinctively hers. Her voice is probably my favourite thing about the track.
As a whole, “Dolly Daydreaming” is a dazzling debut that begs to be repeated over and over. I can’t wait to see how Michelle uses this sound to create more music. It is simply too good for one single and begs to be sprawled out over a full-length album. I, for one, am very much looking forward to it.
