The Mike James Rock Show stared out in 2008, after picking up airplay across stations in the US and a number of awards, the show has gone from strength to strength, the current format includes interviews, exclusive first plays and coverage of some of the best rock music festivals around the country.
it happens on a Friday night from 10pm on PHONIC FM, tune that dial to 106.8 on the FM channel to check it out.
We thought it would be a good idea to catch up with Mike and Dann and chat to them about the first 10 years, here's how we got on....
It's been 10 years since you started the MJRS, do you recall your first ever show? How did you feel? Who was on the playlist?
Mike - It was ten years ago its all a bit hazy but i do remember there was lots of ska and emo about then. I was super nervous as it was the start of phonic FM and in a legendary time slot for a rock show too. Dann i started hanging about on the show about a year in but it took me about 2 years to talk on air and become a full time presenter
Who was the first person you interviewed on the show?
Mike - It was a local band called Idiom, i had promoted there live shows before Phonic started so just had to get them in it was very silly fun.
Dann - The first interview I remember doing was baptism of fire as it was with one of my favourite band as i was chatting with Paolo from Trivium
10 years is a long time, has there been anyone that is no longer with us who you have featured on the show before?
Both - for the entirety of the last ten years, everytime we have lost someone from the rock/metal family we play a track in there honour and talk all about their career
You live and breathe music, which bands have you watched transform from small venue acts into stadium fillers?
Mike - Five Finger Death Punch, Skindred, Bring Me The Horizon, Architects and well i did got to college with Matt Bellamy from Muse so have seen them all the way through there career
Dann - Asking Alexandria, Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine, Don Broco and Newton Faulkner who i once saved from a creepy fan!
Your show doesn't just go out on Phonic FM, tell us where else people can hear you on the airwaves?
Mike - We recently got head hunted by one of the biggest stations in the UK Hard Rock Hell Radio and we are also on one of the leading rock and metal networks Rock Rage Radio across the U.S.A which does great figures for us. our listen again service which we is on Mixcloud and our site is gaining more and more listeners each week and we regularly charts.
Has the invention of YouTube taken away the power of the radio show?
BOTH - Fortunately we use YouTube to our advantage as we use it to host out interviews, shows, podcast and Dann's nearly established Danncast!
Tell us a bit about the format of your show? How do you ensure that it stays fresh and exciting?
Mike - We are lucky enough to be classed as taste maker DJ's so a lot of what we play in the show is brand new music from establish acts to unsigned future headliners and that the fact that we have been best friends way before we started doing this show. We have always had the banter.
Let's assume you have been asked to provide the top three bands for the best rock music festival in the world, who's gonna be on your list?
Mike - The Prodigy to headline, supported by Korn with openers being Enter Shikri
Dann - To headline, it would be Slipknot supported by Architects and Parkway Drive to open
What advice would you give to someone interested in starting their own radio show?
Dann - Don't get bogged down with the details, just get out on air and see what works for you. We've had many formats over the years but our current format is where we feel most comfortable and we are working it!
Lastly, what is the future for the MJRS?
Mike - A summer full of festivals is the mediate future once we get back from DJing in Ibiza, but long term we are always working on were we feel comfortable taking the show next and we welcome you all to come and join us on this journey.
We'd like to thank Mike and Dann for taking the time out to chat to us and we hope to do the same 10 years down the line when they are celebrating their 20th anniversary!
