Well, it’s Saturday 5th March, I went to a couple of FAB shows this week, I saw a local Totnes band called PALE BLUE EYES at The New Lion Brewery in Dartington on Thursday night and last night I was treated to a triple header at The Pit & Pendulum pub in Plymouth where Dean Hutchinson opened up with his acoustic guitar prior to TAUNTS filling the room with some epic riffage before the rock gods MOTHER VULTURE took over and brought the house down, what an epic night right on my doorstep.
I’m looking at festivals at the moment and we already have a few in the bag, The Great Estate in Scorrier (Nr Redruth) is looking good, we may head down to Rattler Fest as well and it looks as if we’re covering Boardmasters and Beautiful Days as well, the calendar is starting to fill up already!
As for new music received this week, there have been a great number of tracks land on my doorstep and I am showcasing 9 of them on this playlist, hit the ‘Play’ button below and let the sounds take you away to another place for the next 30 minutes or so. If you have time, please scroll underneath the playlist and have a read of the bios from our featured bands and artists, if you like the sound of them, take a look on their socials and give them a like.
See you on the other side
I am the Unicorn Head
I am the Unicorn Head are a two piece Anglo/American band who defy boundaries and genre. They formed during the pandemic, as a means for both of them to improve their mental heath during this period.
Their influences are so varied that they have featured in the Sept 2021 edition of PROG Magazine in the UK, and also on punk rock blog sites! They love prog rock, math rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, punk rock, krautrock, and particularly post-punk. All these influences show up in their music at different times!
Their second single ‘Omnipresent’ was picked up by BBC Introducing and eventually played on Tom Robinson’s national ‘Mixtape’ show.
Their new single ‘David Bowie’ is an unapologetic, and heartfelt tribute to one of their favourite artists. The song also serves as its own Bowie trivia quiz, as it name checks so many Bowie songs. How many can you identify? The lyrical content, and the earworm nature of the music, make them feel that the song has a huge viral potential, given the right publicity!
Two of their favourite blog sites honoured them in their end of year awards, with their debut single ‘Eating Cornbread in Quarantine’ being voted number one in the ‘Top 100 singles of the year’ by ‘Less than 1000 Followers’, and the other site ‘Nene’s Butler Presents’ named them ‘Best Band of 2021’.

The Shop Window
The Shop Window are a four-strong IndiePop/Jangly guitar band, fronted by partners in musical crime; Carl Mann and Simon 'Syd' Oxlee. Completing the line up in the formidable rhythm section are Martin Corder (Bass) and Phil Elphee (Drums)
The band released several acclaimed singles during 2020/2021. Those singles were followed up with the critically acclaimed debut album ‘The State of Being Human’ in June 2021. So well was the album received by the indie music fraternity, that it featured in many end of year ‘Best Album of 2021’ lists. The first single to be released from the forthcoming follow up album was 'Lay Of The Land’, this instantly became a favourite amongst fans eager to hear what’s next.
‘Lighthouse’ is the second single to be taken from the band's second album due summer 2022.
It’s a warm, jangly, almost ballad-like song reminiscent of early 90s R.E.M./Teenage Fanclub, filled with soothing vocals and harmonies.
Sometimes the wheel doesn’t need reinventing, and in indie pop terms this wheel is round and rolling along perfectly happily in its simplicity, bathed in beautiful melodies. A band very much comfortable in their skin.
Their social media following has really started to grow quickly with Twitter now being at 2k followers, why not add to it by clicking on the link below and learning more about this fab band?

Punky Muzzle
Punky Muzzle is the brainchild of Yorkshire-born Sam Lawrence, who makes uilleann pipes, owns four sheep and has toured and recorded as a musician (Wilful Missing, Rosie Doonan, Hope&Social, Corinne West) for many years. The drum parts were written in isolation as complete songs by John Simm (Blossoms percussion).
The album also features vocals by Si Wainwright and Rich Huxley of Hope & Social (should be more famous), Sam Kipling of Wilful Missing (nearly famous once, they blew it) and Mike McSherry from the Blue Arsed Flies (never even remotely famous).
Sam outlines the subject matter as follows:
#1 [Shop Thy Neighbour] Plague, Dominic Cummings and the strange culture of dobbing in your neighbours for having their aunty Jo round for a brew. Contains a bad swearword.
#2 [Hayfever] Hayfever. Si Wainwright vocals
#3 [Once Upon A Time There Was Nothing] Ecological collapse, feeling powerless and hope. Si Wainwright vocals
#4 [Crayfish] A disco crayfish having a flounce. Si Wainwright vocals
#5 [Digging] Archaeology and climate change, the end of days. Mike McSherry vocals.
#6 [Sleepless] Your partner cannot sleep, which is turning you both psychotic. Doctor doesn't care. Si Wainwright vocals
#7 [Brown Rice And Acid] This is an absolutely true story about an uilleann piper, who was known in the 1960s as "Brown Rice And Acid H*****y" because those were the only two things to pass his lips. Contains a bad swearword. Sam Kipling vocals.
#8 [Timbuktutu] The protagonist does his own research, on YouTube. Namecheck for Roger Deakin, the nature writer, who loved the concept of lurking in a holloway.
#9 [The Liver Is Evil] Dedicated to a boat friend's massive bender in Skipton.
#10 [Rishi] Rishi Sunak wondered if I'd be better off as a dustman. So did I. He gave me money. I bought a microphone, and some food. Si Wainwright and Rich Huxley vocals.
The title of the album comes from the practice during plague of villagers placing coins in a hollow stone containing vinegar, as payment for goods from surrounding farms - contactless payment! The vinegar was believed to kill the plague. Sam grew up a mile from a surviving plague stone, pictured in the CD release.
Sam’s Influences -include Beefheart, Zappa, Paddy Keenan, Nile Rodgers, Kanda Bongo Man, Jimi Hendrix, Beck, Kris Drever and Half Man Half Biscuit.
