Peter Hook & The Light bring Joy Division's defining albums back to life at Sunderland Fire Station

October 4, 2026

Few bands have left a mark on alternative music quite like Joy Division. More than four decades after the release of Unknown Pleasures and Closer, their influence continues to ripple through post-punk, indie, alternative rock and beyond. Now, fans will have the chance to experience those landmark records performed in full when Peter Hook & The Light arrive at Sunderland Fire Station on Friday 21 May 2027.

Tickets go on sale at 10am on Monday 5 October.

The special show forms part of a wider international celebration of Joy Division's enduring legacy, with Peter Hook announcing a series of performances dedicated to the band's two studio albums. From the stark intensity of Unknown Pleasures to the haunting beauty of Closer, audiences can expect a journey through some of the most influential music ever committed to vinyl.

Released in 1979, Unknown Pleasures introduced the world to Joy Division's unique blend of atmospheric guitars, hypnotic basslines and Ian Curtis' unsettling yet captivating vocals. The following year, Closer arrived in profoundly tragic circumstances, completed shortly before Curtis' death and released in its aftermath. Together, the albums became cornerstones of post-punk, inspiring countless artists and securing their places amongst the most celebrated records in modern music history.

For Peter Hook, these performances represent far more than nostalgia. As a founding member of both Joy Division and New Order, Hook has spent the last decade and a half painstakingly revisiting the music that helped shape generations of musicians. What began with a commemorative performance of Unknown Pleasures in 2010 has evolved into an ambitious body of work encompassing the Joy Division catalogue and key New Order releases, with Peter Hook & The Light now having performed more than 1,000 concerts worldwide.

The band's commitment to faithfully recreating these records has earned them a devoted following of their own. Audiences have embraced the opportunity to hear seminal albums performed live in their entirety, while a new generation of fans has discovered the emotional weight and musical innovation that made Joy Division such a transformative force.

The Sunderland date arrives amid another busy period for Peter Hook & The Light. Extensive touring across Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia demonstrates the continuing global demand for these songs, while Hook's recent induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside his former bandmates serves as further recognition of a remarkable musical legacy.

There is something uniquely powerful about hearing albums such as Unknown Pleasures and Closer performed live. These are records that have transcended their era, becoming touchstones for anyone drawn to music's darker, more introspective corners. At Sunderland Fire Station, fans will have the opportunity to experience that legacy first-hand, guided by the musician whose unmistakable basslines helped define it in the first place.
