Hannah’s latest album delivers a stunning prognosis on the complex relationship between women and medicine through time.
Across its 11 tracks, ‘Fragile Creatures’ invites listeners to a place where science meets superstition and medicine meets myth. Highlighting key moments of strength, resilience, and rebelliousness of women through the ages, it unveils the story of the unyielding battle for bodily equality and autonomy. Speaking about the concepts and themes at play in ‘Fragile Creatures’ on the day of its release, Hannah explains:
"This record is both an offering and a tribute to female pioneers in medicine; and an endeavour to honour, and give voice to, the unsung heroines in the history of our health… My hope is that listeners will not only be intrigued by these stories but also inspired to dig deeper and empowered to challenge the systems that have long ignored or misrepresented women’s voices, as this dismissal remains so prevalent today."
Featuring the potent singles ‘Curious Mixtures’, ‘The Edinburgh Seven’ and the highly personal ‘Young Men Need Their Wives’, receiving support from BBC Radio Merseyside, BBC Scotland, and Radio X along the way. The album has also received early praise from Soundboard Reviews who praised the record as “a new creative milestone for Platt… her most adventurous album; the most interesting her writing has been; and just the straight-ahead best thing she’s done to date”, whereas Fatea Records hailed it as “stimulating and provocative”.
New album ‘Fragile Creatures’ was mastered at the legendary Abbey Road studios and sees Hannah continuing her creative partnership with Ed Harcourt. As with her previous record ‘Deathbed Confessions’, Ed once again produces and performs across this work. In praise of the record, he says:
“Once again, it has been a dream working with Hannah Rose Platt on our third project together; most importantly because of her deep understanding of the importance of new concepts & her fantastic storytelling - hilarious, heart breaking & with dark twists & turns. Each song is a novella in itself, drawing on the bizarre & shameful past of women’s treatment within medicine, society & culture. It’s an honour to be a part of their stories & at least give them a new voice. We pushed the boat out on this one & I’m ridiculously proud of Fragile Creatures. Hail Hannah & all who sailed before her!”
Coinciding with the release of the new single is the news of a 2-week residency at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. Hannah will be playing the album in full, performing at The Space at the Surgeon’s Hall on Nicholson Street, name-checked in the song. It’s a fitting theatre to showcase the incredible story of The Edinburgh Seven as well the other songs on the album. Dates for the shows are 1st-16th August and tickets are on sale now. In addition, Hannah has also just announced a special one-off Album Launch Party show at Water Rats in London on 28 May, where she will be playing the album in its completion with a full-band.
