ABOUT THE TRACK
Taffy (Flags of Aber Prom) We wrote Taffy by accident when we left a phone recording in a pocket during a jam session. It’s a lush moment when something comes so easily out of the blue, and soon afterwards, the words just flowed out!
‘Taffy’ is also an old nursery rhyme which depicts us Welsh as thieves and sneaks, a common stereotype from yesteryear. I came across it while simultaneously reading about the flooding of Cwm Elan (a series of valleys that separate the villages where we grew up) to supply Birmingham with fresh water, and Westminster’s role in making the flooding happen, despite concerns from local people and Welsh members of parliament
I liked the irony of the two themes - in these sense of natural resources, who were the real thieves and sneaks here?
And anyway, how is the King of England the former Prince of Wales?
I was living and working in Aberystwyth when we wrote Taffy. Since the 1990s, the town's North Promenade has displayed the flags of twenty European minority nations, like Wales. To me,the end of the song evokes a battle cry, where each minority nation’s stereotype has banded together in mutual support
MOLETRAP BIO
We're three friends from three rural villages in Mid Wales. Our soon-to-be-released, frenetic rock album is us trying to capture the untamed and often overlooked centre of Wales, and an attempt to break the stereotype of Mid Wales as being a tranquil, quiet area. We always aim to sound like the Cambrian Mountains rumbling and crashing around.
We want to promote the Welsh language and connect people at our gigs to our area's expansive, wild freedom. We sing, in Welsh and English, about the history, places, people, progress, nature and folklore in the area. Making and writing music from our cabin allows us to continue exploring our homes in the Green Desert of Wales
- the least inhabited area in southern Britain.
The first two singles from the album are 'Nation of Sanctuary' - a celebration of Wales' inclusive history and ambitions, and 'Rhagofn' (Welsh for 'in case' or for 'without/lest there be fear')- a reminder of how much more work there is to be done.
The album was partially funded by BBC Horizons / Gorwelion
Thank you so much!
Diolch o galon!
'They're unignorably great. A thousand mosh pits beckon!' - Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales
'They have ruptured my eardrums, but in a postive way!' - Amy Lame, BBC 6 Music
'Harmonised vocals have almost choral, angelic tone before heavy duty choruses kick the trajectory sideways. It’s pulse quickening stuff and signs of something very exciting' - Backseat Mafia
