Edinburgh’s rising star duo Edy Forey return with ‘Nature Boy’, the second single from their forthcoming album ‘Culture Today’, set for release in April 2024. Vocalist Edy Szewy (pronounced ‘Eee-dee Shou-ee’) and keys player Guilhem Forey present a fresh interpretation of a perennial favourite, reimagined from a new perspective with a contemporary edge.
As Edy explains: “It's a jazz classic reharmonised in a very 'Foreyesque' fashion. The Rhodes are warm, and with the unusual chord progression the atmosphere in the song is beautiful in a mysterious way. We chose this standard due to the depth of the lyrics ‘the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return’. God is love, so this philosophy is fitting. Love as the answer to life, for good and for worse. We added some lyrics on the B part stating just that.”
Nature Boy features the much-respected Japanese jazz singer and flugelhorn player TOKU, as well as Tom Gordon, widely considered to be the one of the leading drummers in Scotland, having been a vital part of the prestigious BBC Big Band for many years. On the album ‘Culture Today’, Edy Forey collaborate with a whole host of musical pioneers, including Femi Koleoso (Ezra Collective), Michael League and Bob Reynolds (GRAMMY winners with Snarky Puppy) Sharay Reed (Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles, Aretha Franklin, Rachelle Ferrell, Chaka Khan) Alex Hahn (GRAMMY winning saxophonist) Sarpay Ozcagatay (GRAMMY nominated flutist) and percussion from Brazilians Isac Jamba and Carlinhos Percussao.
The album is mixed and mastered by the GRAMMY award winning producer Bob Power, the engineer behind D’Angelo, Erykah Badu and A Tribe Called Quest, who remarks: “In my 35+ years in the upper echelons of the professional music business, I have seldom met a duo with more talent and drive. They combine a unique and compelling blend of pop music sensibility with a deep foundation of advanced musicianship.”
With their debut single ‘The Fire’ already gaining air time on prestigious stations such as Jazz FM as well as being tipped by a wide range of cultural tastemakers, Nature Boy provides further insight in to the diverse nature of the album to come. The duo are swiftly positioning themselves as notable talent across a wide spectrum of the music industry – more news on the forthcoming album to follow soon.
