Following the release of his widely acclaimed Top 40 debut 'In The Silence', Icelandic sensation Ásgeir is set to release a new single, 'Was There Nothing' from the album on 28th July.
Last in the UK for a sold out April tour that culminated with a heart-stopping show at the Union Chapel, the past year has seen Ásgeir's unrivalled domestic popularity translate far beyond Iceland's shores. Since hitting the Top 40 across most of Europe, the momentum of his international success has reached into the USA (where Columbia Records released the album in March), Japan (he plays Fuji Festival in July) and Australia (where the album went Top 10 and his upcoming shows sold out far in advance). Ásgeir's summer schedule includes another European jaunt in May and his first US tour in June ahead of Australian & Japanese dates in July. Between these engagements Asgeir returns to the UK to play the second (6Music) stage at Latitude Festival and also plays his own previously announced headline at Shepherds Bush Empire on 26th November (see asgeirmusic.com for full tour news).
Born and raised in the hamlet of Laugarbakki (population, 48) in the wilds of Iceland, Ásgeir comes from a large family of musicians. In 2012, at just 20 years of age, the release of Dyrd í dauðathogn made him an overnight sensation in Iceland breaking all records to become Iceland's fastest and biggest selling debut album by a home grown artist - outselling even (label mate) Björk and Sigur Rós' debuts. Staggeringly, one in ten of the Icelandic population now own the album.
Produced by Gudmundur Kristinn Jonsson, in Iceland the unusual poetry of Dyrd í dauðathogn has attracted almost as much attention as the music itself. Combining both electronic and organic elements with gossamer r'n'b production touches, the songs are light and vibrant, inset with his distinctively melancholic voice.
