“Swamped in treacle, with a wit that tears the material away from the sickly sweet arena.” – Drunken Werewolf
The Honey Ants are John Grimsey and Rebecca Hamer. The duo formed in 2013 to write and perform their instant, folk-infused pop songs. Their sound is one that feels current yet nostalgic at they same time and they released their second single ‘Lies (See You Again)’ digitally on 5th May 2014.
‘Lies (See You Again)’ is a song inspired by temptation and sees the duo take a step forward in terms of production following on from their debut single ‘Give Me Arms’, which was completely acoustic. By adding in piano, percussion and backing vocals, ‘Lies’ builds up throughout giving you goose bumps with its beautifully blended lush male-female harmonies that are underpinned by a real sadness and longing. This angst and slight darkness can also be heard on their Nirvana cover ‘Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle’, which the duo are releasing as the B-Side to ‘Lies’ and as a free download via ArtistLink in exchange for an email address: http://t.opsp.in/g25Eh
Having played for other musicians (including bass for Sufjan Stevens and a Glastonbury performance on guitar for Samantha Marais), John formed The Honey Ants to showcase his own songwriting talent. Things got off to a good start with the BBC using a home recording of their song ‘The Trouble With You’ in the TV show 'Off the Hook', Channel 4 using the track ‘Mister Sunlight’ in the series ‘Sirens’ and Tom Robinson spinning their tracks on BBC 6Music.
