We were introduced to a Cornish indie rock 4 piece recently called The Rezner, we caught them playing live in Totnes and after a brief chat with the frontman after the show, we were hooked. When I saw that they were playing the Net Loft stage at this year’s Boardmasters Festival, we wanted to get in touch and have a chat to find out exactly what the festival means to them. We chatted to the lead guitarist Redley Flowerdew, here’s how we got on….
Gentlemen, how did you feel when you heard that you were going to be playing at Boardmasters Festival this year?
Me and the boys love the festival, it's always been so kind to us both as punters and performers. We were four very happy little puppies when we found out we'd be back playing there again this year.
Please take this opportunity to sell yourselves and convince people WHY they need to make sure they’re in the Net Loft when you’re performing…
We're a four piece from sunny old Cornwall, we've just released our debut single 'Micky' which has had a pretty mad response, receiving airplay from Radio 1. We play a mix of punky "in your face" indie rock. We like to make our live shows as intense and exciting as possible with fast high octane tunes that get the crowd dancing, all in all, it's really good fun. You should totally come see us!
Have you played there or attended the festival as a punter before?
We've played twice before, the first time was headlining the BBC Intro stage then the second year, we were on the main stage which was pretty mental! Each time we've played we've stayed for the whole festival and things got pretty messy in a field for the weekend. After the music ends, that's what we do best!
You’re performing on the Net Loft stage alongside some incredible bands and artists, which others are you keen to check out whilst you’re there?
Our buds in Clay Allison are one for sure, they're a mint new young band, and if you haven't seen them you should check them out.
The festival attracts over 50,000 people every year, what do you think it is that keeps people coming back time and time again?
As a festival, it's got so much variety, and it’s by the sea - two things that most festivals in the UK don't have much of. Also, the calibre of acts that the Boardmasters team are bringing into Cornwall, they always do a brilliant job!
There are some pretty incredible acts performing this year, tell me some of the bigger names that you’re keen to check out….
I think the big one at this years festival for us all is IDLES, their work is a big influence on us in recent times, their message as a band is great, and having not seen them before I think we're pretty chuffed to be on the same bill as them. Others we're keen to see this year are Foals, The Wombats, Easy Life and Sam Fender. After all that you'll probably catch me or Sam at the Point Stage cutting some dodgy dance moves to a few DJ's!
A lot of the performers on the Net Loft stage this year are from Devon and Cornwall, how would you describe the music scene where you come from?
Being a band from Cornwall can be pretty challenging as most of the UK thinks the world ends at Bristol, however once you see how much raw talent and great music there is down here in Devon and Cornwall, you'd be amazed. A lot of the bands we've played with around the country aren't half as good as what Cornwall's got to offer.
There are some top bands and artists just waiting to be discovered down here.
Whilst in Cornwall, I hope you’ll be partaking in a cream tea, a walk on the beach and maybe a bit of surfing?
In my 20 years of being in Cornwall I've never had a cream tea, so Boardmasters might just be the perfect time!
Lastly, please tell us where people can keep up to date with you on social media….
Catch us on Facebook & Twitter and Instagram
We’d like to thank the guys for chatting to us and we’re looking forward to catching their set on Friday 9th August at 6:15pm in the Net Loft, if I were you, I’d do the same!
