‘Seamonsters’ was recorded in ten days in America and purposefully has a rougher, harsher overall sound than their earlier two albums ‘George Best’ (1987) and ‘Bizarro’ (1989) owing much to working with producer Steve Albini.
Unquestionably a contemporary classic, the band and this album formed part of the bedrock of 90’s rock, and without the shift in sound that ‘Seamonsters’ was for the band, the British rock music landscape could have sounded completely different. The initial reaction to ‘Seamonsters’ was mixed within the music media, while many lorded the album others such as NME reviewed it less favourably (5/10), with many fearing David Gedge and Steve Albini had deviated too far from the bands more pop-style sound they were widely known for, but it was the combination of Albini’s abrasive production style combined with Gedges vision and playing that had proved to be the perfect combination.
Since its initial release, it has adorned a plethora of prestigious global album lists encouraging readers to listen to it, such as - The Guardian’s (UK) “1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die", Alternative Press’ (US) "The 90 Greatest Albums of the 90s" and "Top 99 Albums of '85 to '95", Rockdelux (Spain) "The 150 Best Albums from the 90s" and Stylus’s (US) "Top 101-200 Albums of All time".
When revisiting the album in 2012, Consequence of Sound perfectly summed up the album's status in the world of music... “Hindsight being what it is, it’s rather difficult to understand why ‘Seamonsters’ was not universally accepted when it was first released. One of the most uniquely crafted breakup albums ever written, its musical contributions to the blueprint of ’90s rock can be heard alongside the influences of Pavement, Guided by Voices, and Nirvana.”
Following the success of their recent streamed live shows, on Saturday, 29 May at 8pm (UK), The Wedding Present will be streaming a live performance of 'Seamonsters' (and more) via DICE TV. Tickets are £12 and available from https://dice.fm/artist/the-wedding-present-nmll and ticket holders will be able to watch for 24 hours after the start time.
