Following the release of her long-awaited sophomore album ‘Soft Power’ in November 2024, New Zealand artist Fazerdaze returns with a natural next chapter in her gritty, hook-filled pop universe: a brand new single called “Motorway”.
Out now via section1, the track arrives alongside the announcement of five US headline shows this fall, including performances at the El Rey in Los Angeles (Aug 23) and Bowery Ballroom in NYC (Sept 21). Full routing below, which includes existing dates supporting Pixies and Spoon.
Listen/watch “Motorway” now:
On “Motorway,” Fazerdaze captures the disorienting feeling of being stuck in transit - between a city, a relationship, and the illusion of freedom itself. Written in the wake of ‘Soft Power’, the track pairs her signature synth-laced pop with a darker emotional undercurrent, as she meditates on the numbing comfort of routine and the quiet ache of not belonging. Amelia shares that the track was written from “a feeling of being trapped between a city and a relationship, searching for home in both, but finding it in neither. It explores an enmeshment with familiarity; and the motorway becoming a symbol of that for me; repetitive, a loop to break out of, a false sense of freedom.”
‘Soft Power’ was met with widespread acclaim.. FLOOD Magazine noted "There’s no doubt that Fazerdaze is continuing to build on the early promise heard on Morningside, and Soft Power is a welcome return for an artist who produces some really intriguing and immersive synthpop sounds," while Brooklyn Vegan praised it as "a very personal record both approachable and replayable." Rolling Stone (AU) gave the record a 4 star review likening it to “the warm glow of sunlight breaking through after a long, dark night, recharging your spirit and lighting the way forward.”
Its lead single “Cherry Pie” earned major recognition with FADER calling it “an intoxicating, lush synth-pop rush to the head,” and Under the Radar celebrating its “gauzy textures and hook-powered majesty.” Watch Fazerdaze perform “Cherry Pie” in a session for KEXP here.
