The current obsession amongst the ‘youth’ today are the YouTube icons that include many post-pubescent teens sharing their views on fashion, beauty, comedy and their general day to day lives (they’re called vlogs I have you know). One of these ‘icons’ is Australian/South African baby faced Troye Sivan who has dropped his latest EP, “TRXYE” which features four new tracks plus his hugely popular ‘Fault in Our Stars’ single.
Already a veteran to the entertainment industry at nineteen years old his mature smooth voice lends perfectly to these current synth, bass filled moody tracks. The EP opens with ‘Happy Little Pill’ which would fit perfectly in the landscapes of big cities as all the hipsters of today skateboard between quaint boutique cafes before it effortlessly blends into a more remixed version of itself perfect for a late night hip hop club.
Second track ‘Touch’ is more vocal focused fusing dark bass tones against his haunting and erotic voice, which will set the fan girls on fire. Third track ‘Fun’ is more stripped with an emotional keyboard intro before blending into fourth track ‘Gasoline’, the ballad of this EP, as vocals stand strong against very quiet ambient piano tinklings.
Despite the odd dash of classical influence the EP is very contemporary based with only a few instruments cleverly entwined with synths and bass to fuse a hip hop underground style. However, final track ‘Fault in Our Stars’ will most likely be the teenage favourite with moving lyrics alluding to the book/film that strike similar to a Coldplay ballad that forces you to shed a tear or two when your heart is feeling a bit lost amongst this music.
Overall a brilliant EP from someone who hasn’t even reached two decades of his life yet, a much more mature and polished approach to contemporary music that has the young girls screaming than the likes of One Direction or Justin Bieber. Whatever your age, whatever your interests I think there’s a place for this EP in your collection.
