From the moment Devil in Me walked onto the stage, the crowd went absolutely insane. It could’ve been the Hollywood Vampires up there and not just a post-punk band from the Southern coast of Portugal, where they spend their days surfing and skateboarding. And we ALL know what comes with skateboarding and surfing - PUNK MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was able to sit down with the charming Apolinario Soares Correia, but most everyone calls him "Poli". He is a man of many talents; not just a singer but also a tattoo artist at IronSkullTattoos , which is in Quarteira, Faro, Portugal. He is also an incredibly talented showman- honestly, Madonna could’ve walked through that crowd and they wouldn’t have noticed- all eyes were on Poli.
I asked him if he was the lyricist, he said he was and he also said that he writes, "in a way, to exercise his demons." He also shared that he "tries to be someone who can possibly help someone else with his words that is going through some shit.." Well-said, Poli, the world is a mess and if your music can help touch one person, that is a large part of music!!
The lineup of Devil in Me right now has been together for 10 years and Poli feels that they are very solid. The three bands they’ve all drawn inspiration from are Bad Brains, Madball and Cro-Mags. Their latest single, "War" (which is lifted from their new album "On the Grind", which is due for release on 14 Jan 2022) starts with these really distinctive riffs, as the song starts at the bottom of the mountain (so to speak) and imagine, you are climbing & climbing, his rap/occasional guttural lyrics are getting louder & louder until you reach the summit and you find yourself jumping up and down, when you might not even know the words!! It's a fantastic song; the perfect first song for a release. And it really gives you an idea of who Devil in Me are, as a band and as personalities.
So if you ever find yourself starting at a band flier and you see 'Devil in Me' - DON'T HESITATE TO GO. It will be worth the ticket.
