Further to the release of her brand new single "Maybe I’m a Liar", London based musician LOOP chatted to us about the thoughts around the track, the music scene in London and how she was hand picked by Elton John to appear on his very own BEATS1 radio show....
We know you're called Loop, we know you're based in London, we don't know much else about you, please take a moment to introduce yourself....
So my real name is Georgia, I've been singing and writing songs since I was about 4 years old, my favourite things are pizza, popcorn, pandas and parties, and I'm really good at remembering Wi-Fi passwords.
Your new track "Maybe I'm a Liar" was released recently, you say that it's about getting stuck with "certain kind of guys", are you referring to anyone in particular in the song? Do you tend to fall for these types yourself?
No, no one in particular for me, more of a stereotype - I was actually in a relationship for four years so this hasn't applied to me for some time, but i definitely used to go for this kind of guy. And I've seen a lot of girl friends go through this kinda cycle too. And guy friends too - they've kept going back to girls who are just seeing them on their terms too! I think it's a pretty relatable theme.
You worked with Toby Scott who has produced material for Little Mix, The Saturdays and Jody Abacus in the past, how was it working with him? Would you work with him again?
It was great! He's based in Brighton so I went down there for the day and it was a day that was really grey and shitty in London but really sunny and beautiful in Brighton and his studio has a window which is SUCH a treat (in most you have no idea what time of day it is - it's like when you go into the cinema when it's daytime and come out and it's pitch black and you're like woah i've just come out a cave). But yeah we had a lot of fun writing MIAL and yes 100% - we've already worked together since and written another song which I love and am considering for the next single. It's the most personal song I've ever written though so I dunno... depends how vulnerable I wanna make myself!!!
Loop is an interesting name, please tell me how you settled on it?
It's my mum's nickname for me! Georgia became Georgie-Lou which became Loopy-Lou which became Loop. So I've been responding to Loop for about 5 years already so it seemed the obvious choice when I wanted to choose an alias. It also obviously has a lot of musical connotations!
You're based in London which is a real melting pot of styles and tastes, did you have to work hard in order to stand out and get noticed from the other acts?
Yeah for sure there is a huge amount of competition in London cos there's so many phenomenally talented people and so many girls of my sort of age doing a similar sort of thing to me, but I think you just have to take the time to figure out exactly who it is you are and what you want to represent and what you want your music to say to people and then you can't really go wrong if you're being 100% genuine. It's taken me a long time to fine-tune my writing style and pinpoint the vibe of my 'brand'. You've got to do some self-discovery first and then once you land on 'you' you should be able to stand out.
I hear that Elton John hand picked your track "As If" for his BEATS1 show, how did you find out about this and how did you feel when you did find out?
Ha yeah that was pretty nuts! I was told by someone on my team and I couldn't quite believe it - obviously I immediately told my parents, and my dad was so excited he downloaded an app where you can set up your phone to record certain time stamps in radio shows so that he knew he wouldn't miss it and so he could keep a record of it forever... hearing Elton John himself say my name and introduce my song was quite surreal!!!!
Clara Amfo from Radio 1 has compared your style to that of Jessie Ware and BANKS, would you agree?
That was a huge compliment!! I love Jessie Ware and BANKS is one of my favourite artists of all time - she is so fucking badass. I think that my music style has transitioned a little since "Losing My Mind", the song that Clara played when she made the comparison, and my newer songs may not draw as much of a comparison as they're a bit more uptempo, but hey if people are putting me in the same bracket as those two then I'm a very happy lady.
Who are your musical influences?
I have so many! I'm a huge 90's pop/RnB fan - old school Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, All Saints, etc. More recently I've been influenced by the likes of Tove Lo, SZA, Tyler The Creator, Rex Orange County, Julia Michaels, Halsey, Lorde... so many people!
Do you come from a musical family?
No! None of my family can sing or play any instruments. Don't know where i got it from! I'm a family anomaly.
You released your critically acclaimed debut EP Call Me Loop earlier this year, are you planning another EP for later this year?
No not at the moment, I'm just focusing on singles for now. But maybe next year!
You supported Jonas Blue on his recent tour of Europe, how was this experience and where do you feel your music was best received?
Oh my god it was amazing. I loved every second of it. Playing live is the best thing ever, and playing in other countries is awesome. Umm that's a good question... I think maybe Amsterdam, but all the shows were amazing experiences and I'm desperate to go back again, and travel even further afield!!
You've achieved a great deal in 2017, playing the main stage at Sundown Festival, the Jonas Blue tour and releasing your debut EP, what are your goals for 2018?
Thank you yeah it's been a pretty amazing year. 2018 I'm hoping to carry on doing more of the same! Writing, touring, releasing some brilliant pop bangers..! Ha. And just getting my music out to more and more people, spreading the Loop love and carrying on doing what i love for a living!
Can you confirm any 2018 festival appearances yet?
Not yet, but I promise you there'll be a few
Finally, would you rather live with a monkey who plays the recorder or a dog that can play the spoons?
BOTH! No if I had to pick then probably a dog..... or can I have a panda that plays the sax?
