It's been a couple of weeks since the release of the band's second album Grandstand and it's time to hit the road and we got some exclusive access to the band as we joined them on tour.
The album has been very well received and gained widespread radio time following the release of singles ‘Talk it out’ and ‘Stars Bleed’ in advance of the album. The album marks a real maturing of the band and their sound. Produced by Danny Ball, it sounds bigger, with a really strong backline providing the space for the fabulous vocals of brother and sister Taylor and Lauren Johnston and their harmonies throughout are stunning.
Things kicked off in Cork (we couldn't join up until Dublin) and although a little trouble with the van added some unneeded stress, a good crowd, bolstered by a good student turnout, meant that this long trip from their base on the north coast Northern Ireland town of Castlerock was a great way to get back into gigging ways.
Next up was Whelans in Dublin, a world famous venue that has seen its fair share of amazing acts. Ed Sheeran, Arctic Monkeys, Hozier and the legendary Jeff Buckley have all played here, albeit in the larger downstairs room. Upstairs is a slightly more intimate affair.
First up was Ellen Sleator who's beautiful vocals and interesting stories got the night going. Perched on a small stool, with her acoustic guitar in hand, Ellen told stories of her travels, friends (and dog) through her lovely tunes and stunning voice. A real delight.
And then it was time for the main event. In truth, until the latest release, Brand New Friend have been pretty quiet but having followed them for the last 4 years or so, and having got a sneak peak of the new album over 12 months ago, I knew something big was coming.
They jumped straight into the second single off the album 'Star Bleed' and then the albums first track 'Dino' before the title track 'Grandstand'. The tracks work so well live and the crowd responded accordingly. Taylor's constant chat with the punters keeps them engaged but contrary to his claim, this is not the 20th anniversary of the band! But his beckoning of the crowd closer, was greeted with everyone taking a few strides closer as we all became firm friends for the night.
The setlist is very ‘new album’ heavy, but 'Girl' from debut album 'Seatbelts for Aeroplanes' goes down a storm, as does a quick medley from the shortly-before-the-pandemic-landed EP 'A Cure for Living ' of 'You can't know' and 'Plastic Flowers'. There was even space to include a new track "from album 3", working title 'Beijing'. The set ended with the pacey 'Lucky' and as Taylor encouraged everyone to join him at the front, the crowd bounced around with the band before the night drew to a close.
Another great night but we have to pack things up quick as it was time for the silent disco.......
And off to Belfast we go…..
Night 2 was going to be a very different affair. Belfast almost feels like a hometown gig (Arron, guitar, and Luke, drums are both from here and Taylor is now living here). And it's a really nice venue, with great sound and lighting (unless you are on the right of the stage, sorry Aaron and Logan, no great pics this time!)
Even early doors, the crowd were piling in and they were treated to the excellent Downpatrick teenager Charlie Hanlon and his band. After supporting Ash in their homecoming tour last year at the Ulster Hall this self styled 'one piece boy band' (love that!) got the crowd moving with some catchy tunes and strong vocals. Catch him live all over the place in Ireland the coming months.
Following a slight wardrobe issue pre gig (Taylor and Lauren basically having the same top's and looking like twins, not a good look as pointed out by dad Steve!) alternate arrangements were made and the band hit the stage.
The atmosphere was different tonight from chord one. The crowd knew all of the words, even for the new songs, and the pit was awash with Brand New Friend t-shirts. 'Stars Bleed' rang out and I think the band were genuinely shocked as the crowd sang the outro unaccompanied at the top of their lungs! Goosebumps, what a start!
The setlist was the same as last night, as the attempt to play a different brand new song didn't go well in soundcheck, with guitarist Aaron making his thoughts clear about the rest of the band not learning it, none of which is printable! But it was all good natured, and the banter and togetherness is endearing and shows in their performances. They are rock solid, know their roles perfectly and don't miss a beat.
Once again 'Girl' from 'Seatbelts…..' goes down a storm and you can tell Lauren is revelling in the atmosphere as her vocals find another level throughout the set. With Taylor giving everything up front, this was the best show I have seen them play, to a crowd that have sung every word.
The new album material has matured from the fast paced pop tunes of their debut album, with an emphasis on a fuller sound and harmonies from Taylor and Lauren. And while the songs themselves have a more thoughtful and reflective meaning, the atmosphere in the room is lifted and joyous.
Closing the set with the more upbeat 'Lucky' gives the punters one last blast before the lights come up. The only complaint, they wanted more. But it's a Saturday night and things have got to be cleared for a club night as the queue is forming for the next round of entertainment.
But they will get more from Brand New Friend. This new music is a massive step up in their music progression and they will be playing bigger venues, to more people in the very near future, you can bet on it. There is so much more to come from this 5 piece, definitely watch this space.
