INTRODUCING THE SUPER TALENTED UK PUNK 5 PIECE PACER....

December 5, 2014

Pacer is a UK punk band and they recently released their second long player to the masses, it's called 'Mechanical' and we think it's rather great, we liked it so much, we hitchhiked up to a service station on the M25 where we met up with the singer Mark Pavey. We couldn't quite get enough money together for a coffee each so we split a latte and then just had enough leftover for a jam doughnut. We chatted about the new album, embarrassing CD's and a small band called The Descendents who we got the impression that Mark likes.....a lot! Here's how we got on....

PEGI YOUNG & THE SURVIVORS - LONELY IN A CROWDED ROOM - ALBUM REVIEW

December 4, 2014

Pegi Young has been in the news recently because of her estrangement from Neil Young. What seemed like the perfect rock pairing have split after 36 years, which is clearly a matter for them and them alone. What is important is that Pegi is a very fine musician and frankly its about time that the talent in the Young household is recognised as extending beyond one man.

COCO AND THE BUTTERFIELDS - LIVE AT THE EXETER PHOENIX 28TH NOVEMBER 2014

December 3, 2014

We arrived at The Phoenix in good time (despite spending 20 mins visiting the scenic back streets of Exeter - looking for a car parking space rather than ladies of the night) to catch up with a few friends at the bar prior to taking our places in the main auditorium for the triple bill of bands that were to dazzle and entertain.

FIELD REPORT - MARIGOLDEN - ALBUM REVIEW

December 3, 2014

Field Report's debut captured a mood of wintry heartbreak set to lush acoustics and Chris Porterflield's distinctive Mid Western voice. Porterfield was in the mythical Wisconsin band DeYarmond Edison, the group famously known for featuring Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and members of Megafaun. Porterfield looked for a while to be the one who would be labelled as the "underachiever", however good things come to those who wait and following the debut's quiet success its time for the follow up.

INTRODUCING SEATTLE BASED PUNK/GLAM 5 PIECE THE YOUNG EVILS....

December 3, 2014

The Young Evils, a rock outfit hailing from Seattle, Washington, are excellent evidence that final products often look nothing like initial intentions. Started as a lighthearted Vaselines-inspired pop duo composed of record store co-workers Troy Nelson and Mackenzie Mercer, the Young Evils today bear only passing resemblance to their past selves.

We hooked up with the guys at Duke's for some of their classic clam chowder, whilst we were there, we thought it only fair that they should answer some of our questions as we had paid for the airfare to get over to meet them, they agreed and we went on to chat about opening a show for The Vaselines, Christmas lists and hanging with Dave Grohl, here's how it panned out....

ULTIMATE PAINTING - ULTIMATE PAINTING - ALBUM REVIEW

December 2, 2014

Ultimate Painting are the coupling of musicians from two bands. In essence this is a collaboration between James Hoare (Veronica Falls) and Jack Cooper (Mazes). This enjoyable debut is full of jangly guitars and deadpan delivery. Indeed it is clear that Messrs Hoare and Cooper are somewhat smitten by the the early Velvet Underground although a dash of Pavement can be thrown in for good measure. It all adds up to a nice rehash of the "couldn't give a s**t, nonchalant vibe" that Lou Reed and John Cale once patented.

INTRODUCING TORONTO BASED BEDROOM POP DUO TV SETS....

December 1, 2014

TV SETS are a lo-fi, bedroom pop duo from Toronto, Ontario.

We thought they'd spent far too long in the bedroom so decided to hook up with them for a chat in their garage, we pulled up a couple of crates, cracked open a few oldies and chatted about ghost hunting, doctors appointments and cassette tapes, here's how we got on....

NEIL YOUNG - STORYTONE - ALBUM REVIEW

December 1, 2014

Wouldn't it be nice to declare "Storytone" a late career masterpiece and to agree with some of the pre-publicity that this is Neil Young's "Blood on Tracks"? Sadly this is not the case. Whilst it is not the unmitigated disaster of "A Letter Home", this deluxe version of Storytone is a "game of two halves" which is rescued by the bonus acoustic set and almost drowned out by an orchestra.

THE TWILIGHT SAD - NOBODY WANTS TO BE HERE & NOBODY WANTS TO LEAVE - ALBUM REVIEW

November 30, 2014

Post referendum there is a new found confidence about Scotland that seems to be infusing its arts and culture. Nowhere is this clearer than on the music of The Twilight Sad. They are a trio from Kilsyth in north Lanarkshire who have patiently build up a sizeable following and whose music gets better upon every album they release. "Nobody Wants To Be Here & Nobody Wants To Leave" is proof that rock music doesn't have to be the tired cold gruel currently served up by many UK bands. This is an album with big ambition, big heart and big tunes, representing a band coming of age.

THE STAVES - BLOOD I BLED - EP REVIEW

November 29, 2014

On this new EP the three sisters from Watford are growing in confidence and their songwriting skills are developing in new directions. With the ubiquitous Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) guiding them in the studio the lighter melodies of "Dead and Born and Grown" are being toughened up. While there is nothing wrong with a bit of whimsy particularly as sung by the perfect harmonies of these sisters its good to see new avenues opening up.

November 28, 2014

Elijah Ocean comes from Maine the state sandwiched between Canada and US and is steeped in the music of Neil Young, the Band and Gene Clark. Excellent sessions on that abundant source for new music "Daytrotter" confirmed that Ocean was mining the classical highways and byways of country rock.
