As singer David Rowlands says, they wanted to "...step away from the stoner-doom..." label that has been placed upon them and return to a bit of the music they started out slogging away playing, with pleasure!

It is strange – I started my teenage years all full of Dire Straits and prog rock – Genesis, Yes, Marillion et al – but I held an eternal candle for the wild and fantastic: New Romanticism, the sub-operatics of Billy Mackenzie and the funky pizzazz with substance and heart that was ABC, doom-laden synths from Heaven 17 and The Human League.

As I approached the venue via Queen Street, I could see a BBC 6 Music mobile broadcast vehicle parked up on the side of the road, this is where Steve Lamacq would be hosting his show from this every evening. Amongst the guests on his show were Frank Turner and The Velvet Hands who were performing in the venue later on. Steve also chatted to Pippa and Dave who run the venue and are key players on the local music scene in Exeter, without the support of these two, the vibrant musical landscape would be a baron, dark and soulless place….

Tonight saw the band on stage, spreading their merry wares to the people of Plymouth. For a cold January Monday night, it was absolutely packed, testament to the fact that Ricky Wilson et al have still got what it takes to draw a strong crowd. As with any tour to promote new material, I feared that people would rather they just knock out a ‘Greatest Hits’ set to keep them happy, would it be like this tonight, only time would tell.
