Has it really been a year since RSD20 took place? Well, I think it is, though looking back I have no recollection of it ever taking place. I recall it being postponed when it should have taken place and then it DID take place but in a socially distanced manner, I also recall there being 3 ‘drops’ throughout the year which to me seemed like overkill, I am referring to having to get up early for one day of the year, waiting in line for a few hours talking to other fellow addicts and then haemorrhaging half of your wages on lovely shiny wax to take home and play before falling into a wax-addled coma on the couch at 4pm. Oh yes, in 2020, folk had to do this on 3 separate occasions, what a bind! Anyway, it is now 2021 and we were going to be covering RSD at Newton Abbot’s one and only independent record store Phoenix Sound, so let’s take a look how the morning panned out…..

As for ‘Instagram Models’, this deceptively uncomplicated torch song builds to a series of slow motion crescendos, set amidst a reflective, confessional lyric focusing upon the real public pressures social media platforms create for the younger generation : ‘behind the make-up / there’s an innocent little girl / that no-one will ever truly know.’

EMILY BARKER and FRANK TURNER release new single 'Bound For Home'....
Long time friends and collaborators, Emily Barker and Frank Turner, today release their stunning new single 'Bound For Home'. The track was written and recorded during the sessions for Emily's critically-acclaimed album, A Dark Murmuration of Words.
Emily explains: "It was a day when I was feeling particularly homesick. Frank read me Clive James's poem ‘Leçons De Ténèbres’ and told me about how James was in hospital in Cambridge, too ill to return home: his memories of growing up in the suburbs of Sydney became the muse for so much of his work. He was as fascinated with how we remember, as much as with the memories themselves."
Clive James passed away a few months after the song was written, just as Emily headed in to the studio to record her recent album, A Dark Murmuration of Words. She laid down this track at the same time, with Frank adding harmonies, with guitar and bowed double bass by Lukas Drinkwater.
The song took on extra meaning when the pandemic hit, with Emily finding herself stranded in her adopted home in the UK, unable to visit her family back in Australia; but also the realisation that the song has a message that most listeners will be be able to relate to in these times as she sings "Bound for home, we're all bound for home in the end".
Listen to 'Bound For Home' here - https://orcd.co/boundforhome
Emily and her band (featuring Lukas Drinkwater, Pete Roe and Rob Pemberton) will also play a headline show at London's iconic Union Chapel on Friday 8th April 2022.
