Few bands have captured the contradictions of modern working-class Britain with the same honesty and intensity as BIG SPECIAL. Since emerging from the Black Country, vocalist Joe Hicklin and drummer Callum Moloney have built a reputation on confronting difficult emotions head-on, balancing frustration and fury with humour, vulnerability and genuine humanity. Now, as they prepare to embark on a winter headline tour across the UK, the duo have released O'JOY!, a collection that shines a light on the songs left lingering in the shadows of their first two records.
Released via SO Recordings, O'JOY! brings together nine tracks that the band describe as "the fallen parts" of their earlier work. Rather than allowing these songs to gather dust, BIG SPECIAL returned to them, reshaping and reimagining the material into a standalone release that reflects where they are creatively today.
The EP follows a run of acclaimed singles including "ONLY FREE WHEN SLEEPING", "PLAINTIVE NATIVE", "SLUGLIFE" and "DRAGGED UP A HILL (and thrown down the other side)". While these tracks expand on the emotional and sonic territory fans have come to expect, O'JOY! also reveals a darker undercurrent. The songs explore discomfort, uncertainty and personal struggle, yet remain rooted in the band's unwavering belief that expression itself is an act of hope.
Reflecting on the release, BIG SPECIAL explain that their debut album was shaped by decades of lived experience, while its successor captured a period of rapid personal and professional change. O'JOY! serves as a bridge between those chapters, gathering together material that never quite found its place previously but remained too important to abandon.
The band's philosophy remains refreshingly straightforward. Rather than stockpiling songs for future repackaging, they wanted to clear the creative slate completely. In their own words, they aim to "empty the clip", leave nothing behind and move forward honestly into the next phase of their journey. It's an approach that perfectly mirrors the authenticity at the heart of BIG SPECIAL's music.
Alongside the EP comes a striking new video for closing track "HOTEL". One of the oldest songs in the band's catalogue, the track has taken on new meanings over time. While it can now be interpreted through the lens of life on the road, its origins lie in navigating changing mental states and the hope, fear and uncertainty that can accompany personal transformation. The result is one of the most emotionally exposed moments in the band's catalogue, bringing O'JOY! to a close with quiet acceptance rather than easy resolution.
Musically and lyrically, BIG SPECIAL continue to demonstrate why they are regarded as one of Britain's most compelling emerging voices. Their songs refuse simple answers, instead offering something far more valuable: an honest reflection of real life, delivered with empathy, intelligence and conviction.
With numerous dates already sold out, their forthcoming winter headline tour looks set to be another major step forward for a band whose momentum shows no signs of slowing. For those who have followed their rise so far, O'JOY! is more than a stopgap between albums. It is a document of unfinished thoughts, rescued fragments and creative freedom, proving that sometimes the songs left behind have the most important stories to tell.
O'JOY! is available now via SO Recordings on digital, CD and vinyl formats. BIG SPECIAL's winter headline tour continues throughout November and December, including a sold-out appearance at Exeter's Cavern Club.
