If Bristol’s underground scene had a dinner party, Spin Class would be serving the main course. The grunge-grit, prog-glazed four-piece have unleashed their second EP Dinner at Derek’s today, July 18th, plating up a five-track spread of crunchy riffs, wild shifts, and emotionally charged lyricism that tastes as chaotic as it sounds.
Formed in 2023, Spin Class quickly gained a local cult following with their debut EP Wednesday, a six-track set that sold out its launch show at Bristol’s Loco Klub and cemented their place in the city’s creative bloodstream. With Dinner at Derek’s, the band swap restraint for rawness—recorded live in its entirety with Josh Gallop at Stage 2 Studios in Bath, the EP captures the unruly electricity of their gigs and rehearsals in full, fevered form.
Influenced by the visceral recording styles of Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin, the band turned to full live tracking to dial up the intensity. “We’re a live band first at the end of the day,” they explain, “and capturing that raw energy in the production was essential.” That ethos powers the EP’s sound—a blur of desert rock swagger, punk violence, and proggy chops that lurch and swing with ADHD-fuelled conviction.
Lead vocalist Louis Slater describes the EP as “a 12-minute, five-course meal” designed to leave listeners satiated but still licking the plate. “We’ve approached this body of music with feeling rather than thinking,” he adds, speaking to the emotional pulse that courses through tracks about intrusive thoughts, addiction, and mental overload.
Released back in April, the EP’s first single Bagel Bagel Bagel made noise far beyond Bristol—earning support from Apple Music’s New In Rock, RTE, Fame Magazine, and KUTX in Austin. Its successor, Cake, arrived in June, delivering a punchy take on internal dialogue from the point of view of intrusive thoughts. "Cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and more cake for dessert!” Slater quips, balancing the pop-punk flair with introspective menace.
Spin Class’s commitment to Bristol’s artistic community runs deep. From collaborating with local illustrators to sharing studio space with fellow DIY musicians, their project is a creative compound of city spirit and sonic experimentation. Dinner at Derek’s is not just a collection of songs, it’s a sweaty, scream-through-the-chaos celebration of what happens when a band stops overthinking and starts overfeeling.
