Rodrigo y Gabriela announce OurHome: A Japan‑born reinvention with a ‘Manga’ twist

June 11, 2026

Rodrigo y Gabriela have never been afraid of ripping up their own rulebook, but their newly announced album OurHome, arriving 18 September via ATO Records, might be their boldest pivot yet. Written and recorded in Japan, shaped by grief, rebirth, and a deep creative reset, and launched with a music video drawn by manga titan Naoki Urasawa, this is the duo stepping into an entirely new dimension - and honestly, it suits them.

Recorded at NK Sound Tokyo and self‑produced by the duo, OurHome marks a return to the expressive acoustic interplay that made Rodrigo y Gabriela global trailblazers, but with a distinctly Japanese aesthetic woven through its DNA. Japan has long been a spiritual anchor for the pair, but this time it became the catalyst for a full creative rebirth. Quintero describes the country as a place that “invites you to look inward,” and that introspection sits at the heart of the album’s themes: identity, belonging, and the search for inner peace in a chaotic world.

The album’s first single, Monster, arrives with a jaw‑dropping twist: a brand‑new video created by manga legend Naoki Urasawa, the mind behind Monster, 20th Century Boys, and Pluto.

Urasawa, a long‑time fan who collected the duo’s vinyl, was stunned to learn they’d written a track inspired by his psychological thriller Monster. The admiration flowed both ways, and soon the trio were sitting together in Tokyo, sketching out a collaboration that feels almost mythic in scale.

The result? A dark, cinematic instrumental that channels the contradictions of the human psyche, paired with original Urasawa artwork that elevates the track into something genuinely special.

The emotional core of OurHome comes from an unexpected place: the passing of the duo’s beloved studio cat, Pelusa. After months of creative stagnation, Rodrigo wrote a song for her the day after she died — and suddenly everything unlocked. Quintero describes it as Pelusa telling them: “Stop fucking around and just do what you do best.” - From that moment, the album poured out.

While the record returns to acoustic textures, it’s far from stripped back. OurHome features an eclectic lineup of collaborators who push the duo into new sonic territory:

  • Marty Friedman — former Megadeth shredder bringing melodic fire

  • Hiromi — Japanese jazz virtuoso with supernatural technique

  • Hiyori Okuda — cellist adding emotional depth

  • Yukihiro Atsumi — guitarist/composer expanding the album’s harmonic palette

Mixing comes courtesy of Dave Sardy (The Who, Oasis, RHCP) and mastering by Stephen Marcussen (Nirvana, R.E.M., The Rolling Stones). This is a heavyweight team.

The album’s title was born during a walk in Melbourne, where the duo spotted a public housing tower with a sign reading OUR HOME. It hit them like a message from the universe.

The concept of “home” — not as a place, but as a state of inner grounding — threads through the entire record. In a world of political, ecological, and economic turmoil, the duo want listeners to reconnect with what keeps them centred.

As Quintero puts it: “We made this album to celebrate what helps us find that home within ourselves.”

Rodrigo y Gabriela have always been innovators, but OurHome feels like a moment of profound clarity, a merging of cultures, philosophies, and personal transformation. It’s an album born from grief, rebuilt in Japan, and delivered with a renewed sense of purpose. For a duo already known for pushing boundaries, this might be the most meaningful chapter yet.
