About The Rest of Us
With this recent single, ‘The Rest of Us’ Ridge Runner’s next step is clear. Instead of walking through the door of opportunity, they’ve burst through the entire frame as a true rock powerhouse, leaning harder into the genre than ever before. In the track, the band returns to bare bone Rock & Roll roots: pounding drums, husky, overdriven guitars, textured organ sounds, and a strong voice carrying a message. There’s no ramp-up; the band bursts out of the gate loud, confident, and with something to get off their chest.
Rigg’s lyrics pull no punches as he addresses the poignant issues: divisive politics, the military-industrial complex, hollow entertainment, questionable corporate ethics, and unrepresentative leadership at the centre of it all. He stands tall and confident, reminiscent of John Fogerty or Sam Fender, with words felt as much as they are heard. Though, out of the criticism, Rigg finds hope and optimism in the same force that founded the USA, the people.
Discussing the song and its message, Rigg said, “Like many others, I’ve spent the last several years shaking my head and feeling discouraged by the news cycle. After a while, I realised that we always find ways to endure despite it all... I attribute this to the strength of the people. We support our leaders by going to work, paying taxes, going to fight their wars, raising good families for the next generation, and in a million other ways. While politics, business, and media get all of the attention, the spirit of the people is the unsung hero that keeps us going. This song is an ode to those who persist against all odds… the rest of us.”
The production of the song marks a big step for the band. The song was recorded as a live take, capturing the energy and message of playing together as one. It was produced by Philly music powerhouse, Barney Cortez, who offered up his studio The Church for live tracking. Following the recording, Ridge Runners turned to longtime collaborator and friend Matt Poirier (The National, Restorations) to mix and master the track. With this new single, Ridge Runners establish themselves as Philly rock mainstays, a band coming into their own and just getting started. Their sound is a unique blend of the classic rock spirit and modern indie flair. Drawing inspiration from legends like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, frontman Coleman Rigg intertwines influences of the gritty edge of the Arctic Monkeys, the infectious melodies of The Kooks, and nostalgic rock vibes reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival. With a biography stating simply: "We don’t have a soulless, corporate bio to sell our band. We play rock music, we play hard, and we are always busy." This statement perfectly encapsulates Ridge Runners’ ethos. They are a band driven by authenticity, hard work, and a love for rock music that is evident in every riff.
