Once famously described as ‘licentious, festering reprobates’ and ‘leprous anti-establishment scumbags’ and banned from playing in their home country, it’s difficult to overestimate the shock and awe The Boomtown Rats inspired in late 70's Ireland. The Rats set out to “disrupt, disturb and question what it meant to be young in the Ireland of the mid-70's”.

Formed in 1988, The Beautiful South were a household name, you don’t meet anyone these days who've never heard of the string of classic hits such as ‘Old Red Eyes is Back’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Perfect 10’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’ and of course, their number one single ‘A Little Time’.
They produced 10 studio albums, 3 Greatest Hits compilations and achieved 15 million record sales worldwide.
In 2007, they decided to call time on the band but Dave Hemmingway and Alison Wheeler along with departed songwriter Paul Heaton were having way too much fun and so, The South was formed. They were joined by fellow mainstays from the original touring band and, armed with a sensational back catalogue, they departed to carry on where TBS left off.
We recently had a chat with Alison Wheeler (you can read the interview HERE) and being the all-round lovely person that she is, invited us along to the show (in exchange for a few bottles of ale), read on to see how the evening unfolded…..

PAPER AEROPLANES TO PLAY AT EXETER PHOENIX ARTS CENTRE NOVEMBER 19TH....
Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn are Paper Aeroplanes, they hail from West Wales and their musical output is often likened to that of Nerina Pallot and Turin Brakes. Their influences range from Laura Veirs to the sublime tones of Jeff Buckley, Pete Yorn to Sarah Mclachlan and Bjork to The National with a strong mix of Suzanne Vega, Nina Simone, The Cardigans, Leonard Cohen and Jeffery Lewis thrown in for good measure.

So from New York City to the slightly less 'gangsta' streets of Totnes in the sleepy shire of Devon, the trio exchanged their usual hangouts (Madison Square Garden, Empire State Building and Times Square) with the best that Totnes had to offer (The Royal Seven Stars, Morrisons and The Cat Cafe) in order to please the crowd that had ventured out on a Sunday evening to witness this once in a lifetime experience. Let's get inside the club and see how things went down.....

My Extraordinary mark the end of their extended absence with the release of the incredibly accomplished mini-album 'The World We Live In'.
It’s been two years since they released their ‘Reality’ EP and in that time, jobs have been quit, backline overhauled, home-studios constructed and new faces have been added and reshuffled within the ranks of the Newcastle five-piece.
We caught up with Anthony Thompson (vocals) at a live filming session for the new series of Geordie Shore, our eyes met across the fog of fake tan and hairspray, we stayed for 13 nanoseconds before getting the hell out of their to find a nice traditional boozer where we could get a decent pint. We chatted about Michael Jackson's 'Thriller', supergroups and members of the band who enjoy pain, here's how it went....

ROYAL BLOOD - ROYAL BLOOD - ALBUM REVIEW
Crikey! These two boys from Brighton make a big noise and no mistake. Royal Blood, Mike Kerr (vocals and Bass) and Ben Thatcher (drums), have some spectacular rock chemistry going on. From the moment that the explosive opening number 'Out Of The Black' hits the back wall it's very hard to believe that there are only two instruments at work here and the energy barely lets up for a moment throughout these ten blistering tracks.

Since establishing himself as a premier blues rock live performer with a solid run of studio releases behind him Joe Bonamassa has been the model of consistency.
Live, there is no questioning the American guitarist's six-string talents and his solo albums, including the excellent Sloe Gin and The Ballad of John Henry, have always featured a covered blues classic or five as well as a smattering of top-line, original material.
U2 - SONGS OF INNOCENCE - ALBUM REVIEW
Like most people I found this waiting to be sent to my library from a certain site. I must admit I was quite excited as I am a fan and we haven’t had an album from this group for some years. I was away when this was released, so when I made it home today I eagerly downloaded this. I will admit I was a bit worried that this wouldn’t be any good, after all why would they be giving this away in a digital format? But then I heard how much they were reputedly paid for this stunt and it does make sense.
Read MoreALT-J - THIS IS ALL YOURS - ALBUM REVIEW
Alt-J are that rare thing - a rock band that genuinely has an "alternative" sound. Unlike most such bands, they make use of dynamics and space in music - they are not scared to be quiet or reflective, slow in tempo with every sound and nuance exposed. Each song is a miniature masterpiece with its own instrumentation and each could be the soundtrack to a moody, atmospheric, but very classy, TV drama.

I think this is a good Leonard Cohen album, but not a great one. I've listened to it many times now, and although I like it, I think it lacks some of the lyrical depth and musical richness of Old Ideas, which I thought was a masterpiece.

The wonders that have flowed from the East Nuek musical community that is the Fence Collective, particularly King Creosote (Kenny Anderson) have been a quiet triumph. Anderson's album with Jon Hopkins 2011's "Diamond Mine" was one of the best of that year and he has a fine pop sensibility, spry wit and melodic charm to spare.
Read MoreGRATEFUL DEAD - WAKE UP TO FIND OUT: NASSAU COLISEUM, UNIONDALE, NY 3/29/1990 - ALBUM REVIEW
"Wake Up to Find Out" is a three-CD live album by the Grateful Dead containing the complete concert recorded on March 29, 1990 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. With such a long and varied career there are "hot" and "cold" phases when it comes to Grateful Dead concerts and music. In the early 1970s in particular they were untouchable in terms of their stage shows, Yet by 1995 as Jerry Garcia's health declined they were listless and mediocre, sadly burned out after endless touring and management pressures. In this sense the 1990 tour of the US and Canada, is considered by many Deadheads, as their last great tour.
Read MoreHISS GOLDEN MESSENGER - LATENESS OF DANCERS - ALBUM REVIEW
Following the progress of Hiss Golden Messenger over the 5 albums released by the band thus far has been a satisfying road trip. Every new release seems to notch up the quality and the songs of the bands leading light M C Taylor grow in sophistication and self assurance. Their last album "Haw" was a particular favourite although "Lateness of Dancers" may be about to trump this.
Read MoreADAM FAUCETT - BLIND WATER FINDS BLIND WATER - ALBUM REVIEW
Adam Faucett hails from Arkansas and is one of those musicians who belonged to a band called "Taught the Rabbits" who you file in that drawer marked "should have been bigger". Faucett has a voice that comes across like a hybrid of My Morning Jacket's high level pipes of Jim James combined with the more earthy concerns of John Fullbright. Quite why Faucett languishes in relative obscurity and is not wider known is one for the Gods of Fate to explain, what is clear is that some detective work on the part of readers of this review would be richly rewarded.
