To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Beastie Boys’ multi-platinum album Check Your Head, on July 15, UMe will release a limited-edition reissue of the rare 4LP deluxe version of the album, originally released in 2009 as an artist store exclusive. The long out-of-print and much sought-after box set features the 2009 remaster of the original double album, plus two extra LPs of bonus content including remixes, live versions, and B-sides.

I have sat with this record revolving through my mind for over a week now and I still can’t even begin to form thoughts sufficient to do justice to its immense importance to the canon of rap music and hip hop culture. To start with, Kendrick has moved the goalposts even further away, taking more risks than anyone might expect from such a huge star in the musical firmament. This is an artist - and I use that word with all the weight it merits - who has produced a run of albums within the last decade that more than matches that of bands like The Beatles, Radiohead, Steely Dan, Public Enemy or solo artists like Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen or Michael Jackson. Yet, taking ALL of the aforementioned into consideration, his achievements may soon eclipse all of theirs. Hyperbolic slander? Naturally, you, dear music listener, are perfectly entitled to feel that way.

VVEST, East Coast artist, producer, and record label owner, has released his first single of 2022. It represents some experimentation from the rapper’s usual style, replacing trap drums and hi-hats with more live instruments instead. The most notable piece of instrumentation on this new single, Bad Move Baby, is the Spanish-style saxophone that runs through most of the song. Once it kicks in after 15 seconds, that’s it. It’s stuck in your head for at least a day; it’s just such a catchy, memorable brass riff that seems to teleport you straight to the Copacabana.
